Commander in Chief and Arbiter of Life and Death

Attention American public!  This is your leader.  I just wanted you to know that we plan on killing a “radical Islamic terrorist” in some country you couldn’t care less about.  I suppose you could refer to it as an assassination.  By the way, he’s also an American citizen.   He is is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them.  A few unnamed Intelligence sources have provided us with this information, and you know that unnamed intelligence sources always have your best interests at heart.   There will be no need for a trial of any kind, because we already know that he’s guilty.  Did you miss the part about the unnamed intelligence sources?  Thanks so much for your attention to this matter.   Please resume shopping and fantasy league baseballing at once.

That wasn’t exactly how the New York Times put it yesterday, but it’s certainly close enough.

The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday.

“The danger Awlaki poses to this country is no longer confined to words,” said an American official, who like other current and former officials interviewed for this article spoke of the classified counterterrorism measures on the condition of anonymity. “He’s gotten involved in plots.”

The official added: “The United States works, exactly as the American people expect, to overcome threats to their security, and this individual — through his own actions — has become one. Awlaki knows what he’s done, and he knows he won’t be met with handshakes and flowers. None of this should surprise anyone.”

I’m sorry, Mr. (or Mrs.) American Official, but that’s NOT exactly what I expect.  Well, I mean it’s what I’ve come to expect since the United States government became a corporo-militarist junta with an all-powerful executive, instead of a constitutional republic with three co-equal branches, but I think you know what I’m driving at.

And the New York Times, corporate lapdog that it is, never once mentions the concept of due process, which is, OOOPS, I’m sorry, WAS one of the concepts that used to differentiate the U.S. from places like East Berlin, Fascist Italy, and the Soviet Union.

And whatever you do, don’t worry about the recently invented term, “domestic terrorist”, or the fact that it’s become an honest to goodness meme over the past few months, to the extent that it seems like predictive programing.  I’m 100% certain that the President, regardless of who he is, or what party he may belong to going forward, will only label real terrorists as terrorists.  After all, our elected leaders and unelected, completely unaccountable intelligence agencies have never shown themselves to be untrustworthy, and certainly would never lie in order to advance an agenda.

But what about the possibility of enemies lists?  Isn’t it conceivable that those in power would concoct phony evidence and then use the terrorist/domestic terrorist label on critics, and then simply assassinate them in order to silence valid criticism?

Well, frankly, I can’t believe that you’d make such a crazy suggestion.  This is America.  The human beings in control of America are genetically superior to the human beings who were in control of the nations that have acted like that in the past.  And anyway, it’s not like Obama is trying to hide this from us.  He just told us exactly why he plans on assassinating an American citizen without a trial.  Some unnamed sources have confirmed that he’s a “radical Muslim” who has “gotten involved in plots”, and hey, that’s good enough for me.   Never mind that killing people based on the claims of unnamed sources is the very definition of a slippery slope.  Just keep on trusting in the integrity of your leaders, who only have your best interests at heart.

That fact that the infrastructure is now in place for the President to label individuals as terrorists, without any evidence, and then to murder them, should only worry real terrorists.  All of you sissies crying over spilled civil liberties should just shut the fuck up.  This infrastructure will never be misused.  Honest.
